Abstract:
Ship production involves many stages of fabrication process. Throughout these processes it is expected
that dimension variance may occur and if not managed properly it could cause dimensional problems which will lead
to rework and delay. This problem can be controlled and minimized through good dimensional management
practices known as Accuracy Control Systems. Accuracy Control System in shipbuilding industries is proven to have
reduced production time, rework, and also improved productivity. The present work is based on a pilot study carried
out in a shipyard on the initial implementation of accuracy Control Systems. To achieve high degree of unit
accuracy, a pilot dimensional control program was initiated in plasma cutting machine, by collecting and analysing
the relevant data. Based on these findings, recommendations were given to the shipyard on how Accuracy Control
System can be initiated for better control of dimensional variances. It is inferred that by implementing Accuracy
Control System there will be considerable improvement in the quality of ship building process.
